Root Skankadelic Reggae - Silver City, NM
FROM El Paso's "What's Up Weekly" (June 21-26 issue. vol 7 #38):
Man That's Hip
Reggae Party - Lucky Devils, 6/24
By Michael Devine
During every blistering El Paso summer, everyone should simmer down regularly with a bit of reggae music. It's steady swaying rhythms and hypnotic jamming can also be helpful to your wellbeing. Reggae is an incredible stress reliever and good food for your soul.
That being said, an amazing all ages feast awaits you. For an appetizer, a taste of dub reggae from El Paso's own Durty Waturz. In all honesty, it is not only my favorite style, but also I feel it is incredibly underrated. Dub Reggae takes the foundation from the Jamaican Dancehall sound then whirls it around into reverbed and heavily echoed groove. They are the kind of tunes that pull you into a peaceful and harmonious mood. Durty Waturz may only be a five-piece band, but their sound as well as their musical message is huge.
Radio La Chusma, is an El Paso favorite. They take Reggae and fill it with rich Latin textures. If you can envision, Bob Marley playing with Carlos Santana and King Sunny Ade, you have a pretty good idea of what this sweet septet is serving. Spiced with intricate layers of percussion and vocals, RLC is the kind of world music that is played from the heart and can satisfy your soul.
The main course, is Silver City's Root Skankadelic.
Old School Funk, English Ska with an American Jam band slant pushes their flavor of reggae through the roof. They deliver a potent traditional sound with meaty beats and smooth flowing vocals. Although the group was formed only about two years ago, they are making a meteoric rise with sold out shows and impressive performances at many large-scale outdoor festivals in the area.
With the level of professionalism of all the three bands and their dedication to the doctrine of reggae, the entire evening should be experienced. Each group brings something special to the table, so get there early. You don't want to be late for this soulful soiree.
